Ammon: Day Care, One Year Later

It's been almost a year since Ammon's childcare regulations have been in place.
Currently, there are twenty-one total day cares in Ammon, that's a combination of both home and commercial.
So far, the regulations are going well. In fact, within this year, some people have been rejected because of prior felony records.
And that's exactly what the ordinance is trying to do. When it comes to child care, Idaho as a whole, hasn't exactly had the best track record.
But the city of Ammon has been working hard to change that.

Ron Folsom, Planning Director: "We want to catch people who are violating laws especially when it comes to children."

The number one priority is child safety.
And background checks are key to ensure that.

Folsom: "We do yearly background checks and every daycare worker and operator in the city of Ammon this case specifically show us why it's important to do it on a daily basis."

Folsom is referring to the Mooreheads.
Gary and Beverly Moorehead are former child care providers, for what was once called the Twenty-Four Hour Safety Land.
Today, they're facing fraud charges for failing to report income they made while one was receiving Medicaid payments.
Although their criminal case is not related to the safety of children, Folsom says it speaks of ones character, and if convicted their daycare days will officially be over.

Folsom: "When we say other types of child care someone been convicted of a felony not necessarily related to the children then that would speak for character and don't want people with law character taking care of children."

Folsom says Ammon will continue to step up its game with routine checks and strict rules.
Folsom says within the next two years, Ammon will make additional requirements to keep up to date with other cities.
As for the Mooreheads they can face up to fourteen years if found guilty.
