Wild Weather Causes Accidents and Several Power Outages

The wild weather is creating a huge mess out on the roads. Emergency responders have been stretched thin.

The warmer temperatures and wet weather we got yesterday made things very icy today. Law enforcement, paramedics and tow truck drivers all worked extra hard today trying to keep the roads clear

"We've ran out of Ambulances at least once today," said Capt. Mike Kinghorn of the Idaho Falls Fire Department.

That's because they were going from one accident to another, wild weather and icy conditions sent cars sliding into guard rails, rolling on their sides and slipping right off the highways.

"The ambulances have been running quite steady and a lot of slide offs," says Kinghorn.

About 53 slide offs were reported by Idaho State Police, they've also had 11 property damage accidents, surprisingly only 2 injuries were reported in those.

In Bonneville County, there have been 37 accidents, including this one where a van hit a telephone poll, an ambulance took him away with minor injuries.

"You need to slow down," says Noris Burgener, from Classic Auto Body.

We've heard that one before, and we've seen this before...yet the accident numbers keep rising...but here's one piece of advice that can save you.

"Don't tailgate, that's been a lot of the accidents is tailgating too close, when its icy and you can't get stopped," says Burgener.

Lets take a look at the road conditions, purple means the highway is difficult, blue means its fair and the red circle with the white line means the highway is closed. Highway 26 is closed from Ririe to Wyoming State Line, Highway 20 is closed in two places, first from Ashton to the Montana state line, and its closed heading out toward the site.

And speaking of the site, its closed today, anyone who went out there this morning was escorted back to town either in their own car or if they chose, buses were offered.

the wild weather also knocked out power to several hundred homes in the area. Rocky Mountain power reports 184 homes lost power twice today because of the winds, 161 homes in Rexburg were effected and about 1254 homes in Howe are still without power tonight.

I also called the Idaho Falls airport, they tell me there was only one cancellation today, that one was coming from Salt Lake City, which grounded some flights earlier.

And if Highway 20 does re-open, Yellowstone Nation Park has most of their roads closed as well.
