Have you ever wanted to try food from around the world.
Well it turns you can, right here in Idaho Falls.
Ida-Russkie opened only a year ago and its already spicing up kitchens around town.
Brent Laird and his wife Varvara are bringing the flavor of Russian and European goods to Idaho with their grocery store.
Welcome to Russia. Ida- Russkie has it all, from the past to the present.
All the good stuff all the way from eastern Europe.
Brent Laird, owner: "Cheeses and sausages really popular, good Gouda, smoked Gouda, Swiss from France."
Doug Preston: "The Polish cookies."
Marina Griggs, Russian native: "My favorite is the chocolate, because Russian chocolate is the best chocolate in the world."
Casey Orbison: "I like some of the fish."
Laird: "One thing that's unusual is they marinate the whole tomato and that's something I don't see around here."
For many of the customers this little store has become a home away from home.
Griggs: "It's like a little piece of my country for me. And when you can find familiar boxes, familiar jars and candy with Russian names on the box, you feel really good."
And for others it's a window to another world.
Varvara Laird: "They stop and say just interested. What is it. What is European food?"
Orbison: "I like trying new stuff. Everything is new here."
Preston: "Gives us variety."
From borsh, the traditional Russian soup, to Lemonad that's soda pop, to caviar, and some of the more authentic items, like pickled watermelon, or Kvaas, a popular beverage, all it takes is an open mind.
Laird: "They make soup out of it called Kroska with cold vegetables and sometimes use it as a hangover cure."
(How is it?)
It's good.
Ida-Russkie is quickly making its mark and not just in Idaho.
Laird: "I have customers form Montana and from Jackson Hole, Wyoming."
The secrets out about Idaho's hidden treasure, Ida-Russkie.
If this has sparked an interest in you, for say learning the Russian language, or if you're having a party and want to serve some home made "piroshki" , that's "perogi" just place your order at the store.
