IDAHO FALLS - If you want to take a trip around the world it's a good idea to know how to read a map.

And if you want to make some new discoveries tips from those who know best may be a big help.

Mrs. Couch's social studies class is preparing these young explorers as they head out on the open waters.

"Today we were learning about practicing the knowledge they have of lines of latitude and longitude and were kind of doing our simulation for explorers," says Longfellow Elementary School teacher Roz Couch.

A simulation of captains, pirates, and sailing ships.

"If you have gone the northerly route, the breeze is a good thing," says Couch.

"In social studies it's really fun because you get to learn about explorers like this," says student Spencer Egbert.

"She just thinks of fun things for us to do in class and help us learn," says student Shelby Black.

And the students aren't the only ones having a good time in class.

"I have the best job in the world. I like to tease that some of you have to go to your jobs I get to go and have fun all day," says Couch.

That fun continues with a roll of the dice and ships reaching closer and closer to their destination but Mrs. Couch is prepping her students for another destination.

"I tease the kids and I say my goal for them is that I they don't need me anymore so I'm hoping by the end of the year that they're self sufficient in they're learning that they could come and pretty much do my job," she says.

Congratulations to Mrs. Couch who is this week's Head of the Class.

She will be taking home our Golden Apple Award courtesy of Crown Trophy.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
