IDAHO FALLS - It may be Mrs. Hubbell's classroom but a special guest is making an appearance.

Linden Park Elementary counselor Michele Wells dropped in to the class to provide her own lesson plan.

It's not the everyday reading and geography but rather a how to on active listening.

"If they can learn these skills now then when they're older than it will be better for them to use those skills to understand what's really going on," says counselor Michele Wells.

To help the students become aware of these skills Mrs. Wells asked the kids to do something they likely never heard before in class, talk while the teacher is talking.

But it's not only using their ears for this active listening lesson.

"I learned if we are listening we are keeping our hands to ourselves and our feet and we are watching her wherever she goes and listening to what she says," says student Knight Scott.

"When your talking to someone you have to look at them and make sure they know what's happening," says student Leslie Power.

"That they use more than just their ears to listen with that they use their whole body," says Wells.

Mrs. Wells makes her rounds throughout the school and the students are enjoying her visits.

"I like how she explains things because then i understand them better," says student Christina Messerli.

"I think when Mrs. Wells comes in she helps all of the kids," says Scott.

And she's making a difference.

"It makes people understand how to be nice and how to treat people," says Leslie Power.

"I want to let other people know what she told me so that they can be better people if they're mean." says Messerli.

"From year to year if the students stay you get to see the impact you have and that's an amazing feeling," says Wells.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
