AMMON - "What were doing today. Big test day," says Hillcrest High teacher Brian Kaluza.

Students in Mr. Brian Kaluza's math class will soon be solving problems and putting answers in the blanks.

"We're learning rulers and measurements, inches and centimeters, the basics of how to measure things in real life. We're learning our times tables and we're learning clock work how to tell time how to operate on a schedule," says Kaluza.

There's a lot to store in the brain for this test so before getting started students rotated from station to station to review.

"They always say two minds work better than one. Having them work with somebody allows them to reflect off each other, ask questions to each other, give each other information," he says.

"Did you study for the test?" asks Justine.

"Yeah," replies student Ethan Johnson

"How much did you study?"

"A lot."

"And did you study for the test?" asks Justine.

"nope," replies student Alexis Spitz.

Whether these students studied hard or just scanned over some notes, Kaluza sees their progress every day they enter his class.

"You can see the students grow. I mean I've had these students 6 weeks and I can see the growth they've made in just that amount of time," says Kaluza.

And it's only been 6 weeks since Kaluza began his teaching career but his students are pleased with his choice.

"He's a nice teacher," says Johnson.

"He's cool he rocks," says Spitz.

And so is Kaluza.

"It makes my job well worth it. It makes me want to come to school every day it makes me want to teach."

Congratulations Mr. Kaluza who is this weeks Head of the Class.

He will be taking home our Golden Apple Award courtesy of Crown Trophy.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
