Head of the Class - Rex Taylor
By Justine Beauvais
IDAHO FALLS - With a roll of the dice these 7th grade students in Mr. Taylor's English class get their learning started with a game.
"I teach writing, spelling, and grammar only so those not being peoples favorite things, I have to come up with a very innovative creative ways to make that exciting," says Rex Taylor, English teacher at Eagle Rock Junior High. To make prepositions exciting, "I'm trying to see do they remember any of them, how many do they remember, how fast can they put them together as a group," says Taylor. This game involved teams battling it out for the ultimate prize, getting to hold the rainbow Koosh balls. "Usually teachers just talk, you can say this is what you do but Mr. Taylor lets you act stuff out and we play games to learn stuff," says student Rian Brumfield. "We sing we dance we play games we explore different genres of writing whatever it is that is gonna excite the students and relate to them, generally that's where I go," says Taylor. But where Mr. Taylor also goes is above and beyond being a teacher. "It's important to be a friend because some people have a hard time learning and some people just goof around and so it's nice to have someone who doesn't treat you like you're a little kid and really helps you out and feels comfortable asking questions," says student McKenna Petersen. "I try to make it something new and different that they haven't experienced yet," says Taylor. And it's these experiences keeping the kids wanting more. "He makes it fun and it's not just like when is class gonna be over it's like aww I have to go to a different class now," says Petersen. "I'm just a goofy awkward guy and this is where I fit in," says Taylor. Congratulation to Mr. Taylor who is this weeks Head of the Class.
