McCain Chooses Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin For Running Mate
By Mary Sturgill
DAYTON, OH - American Politics just got a whole lot more interesting today. This has been an historical campaign and John McCain made history again today by announcing Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate.
In a move that has everyone talking, Senator John McCain has picked the first term female governor of Alaska as his running mate. John McCain says, "She's what i need, she's what Washington needs." The McCain campaign says he used his heart when he chose The 44-year-old Alaskan . She was such a long-shot, most of America won't recognize her name. Sarah Palin says, "I know it will require the best I have to give and I will promise nothing less." Palin, a mother of 5 was elected governor in 2006. She is against same sex marriage and abortion rights. The governor is a hunter and a member of the National Rifle Association. She is popular in Alaska and at the forefront of the oil drilling debate in that state. But she also has ties to Idaho. She was born in Sandpoint and graduated from University of Idaho. Ronald James believes she is just what John McCain Needs, "I think she really completes the ticket for John McCain. She brings a lot to the ticket that maybe the Democrats missed the opportunity on." Palin says, "Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest hardest glass ceiling in America... but it turns out that the women aren't finished yet and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all." Jim Southwick isn't so sure. "I think it'll hurt him. With the state of the country right now and the financial problems we've got right now, I think we need somebody with more of a strong financial background and I don't know that she has that, as a matter of fact, she's kind of new, I don't even know a lot about her. And for some, the choice just peaked their political interest. Devona Davis says, "I think it's really exciting." And Keith Fielding says, "It's gonna make things really interesting." Quick to attack Palin's credentials, Barack Obama's campaign released this statement: "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency." Inexperience has been McCain's big criticism for Obama. Now his running mate's short resume is expected to be put under the microscope. Tom Keister is skeptical, "I'm not sure how much it's gonna help. I'm thinking that he could have gone with someone with a little more experience. It might have been more helpful. It'll be interesting to see." White House spokesperson, Dana Perino says, "The White House is energized and excited by this choice. President Bush called Governor Palin just before his meeting with President Kikwete of Tanzania. He said that the McCain-Palin ticket is very strong. He wished her good luck, told her that she will be a fantastic vice presidential candidate, and that he is looking forward to a great victory in November." |
