Back to School Shopping Part II

IDAHO FALLS - Last week I took you shopping with Tricia Scrogum and her two younger kids. I brought you tips to help make those clothes and your money stretch.

This week proved a little more difficult, as we went shopping for her teen.

Tricia Scrogum: "It's a little bit harder with teenagers because they want to wear what's in style. The little boys were easier because you can just buy almost anything, they'll just wear jeans and tee shirts."

This is Whitney, she's thirteen and that means it's time for fads and trends. That could become quite pricey.

Tricia Scrogum: "Take inventory on the basic things they already have and then go and buy the new things you can pair with it to make a complete outfit."

We started out by taking an inventory.

Then we set a budget, $200.

Now it's time to shop, but first we got a tip from an expert.

Becky Chiappini, (Kohl's): "A good idea is to just buy a few key items. Tank tops, jackets, then throw them with the basics you already have at your house and that's how you'll cut your costs.

We did just that.

Jennifer McGraw: "These pants were in last season, the skinny jeans. Now you can pair these if you have them from last year with something new and trendy and that's the new vest look. Everyone is really into that right now. This is the perfect look to save money."

Whitney picked out a handful of clothes that fit this years trend and then we narrowed it down to must haves.

Tricia Scrogum: "Make sure they can pick out what they want, but in the end make sure they just get what they need."

But it's also important to check those prices.

Tricia Scrogum: "Go store to store to look around for the best price. A lot of stores have the same items, but some are less in price."

Don't wear your self out. Be sure to short shop. Long shops can be grueling.

Tricia Scrogum: "Lead to arguments and grumpy kids and impulse buying."

We ended our short day of shopping with some good deals and great bargains.

This vest from Kohl's for only $19
These skinny jeans from Macy's only $25
These tee shirts from Kohl's for only $6 bucks
and these tennis shoes for only $23 from Kohl's.

In total: 5 shirts, two pairs of jeans, a dress, a vest, and shoes all for a grand total of $171.

This completes the back to school wardrobe and still leaves you enough money to buy the essentials and that five star notebook you need for middle school.

I was also told it's best to wait and buy back to school clothes for your teens about two weeks after school starts.

That way they can see what the trend will be for this year and actually wear the clothes you buy them.

Those are my middle school shopping tips for this week.
Stay tuned for next week and i will have a whole list of tips to help you shop for your for high schoolers and this time we're shopping for boys.
