Security Test Part 1
By Danielle Leigh
More than eight out of ten schools in Idaho are not prepared for a crisis. That's what the first ever statewide "Safe and Secure Schools Assessment" reported this year.
But what exactly does that mean? We wanted to know just how safe and secure our schools really are. So with that in mind, I emailed a handful of school districts in Eastern Idaho asking for permission to go undercover, and put their schools' security to the test. Only two districts responded and gave me permission. Here's what I found. Access was easy, and no hall pass was required. I randomly selected nine schools throughout the Bonneville Joint and Jefferson School Districts. Over the course of a week, I entered all of them at different times in the day, wearing plain clothes and a hidden camera. First, I tried exterior side doors which should always be locked except in high schools and in some cases middle schools, but that held true in only one case, at Falls valley Elementary. There, I walked through the playground, past duty aids, and entered through a back door. It was locked, but the kids heading to recess held it open for me. I also entered each school through the main entrance, and in eight of the schools, I walked right passed the main office without any questions asked. Rigby Junior High was the only school that stopped me while I was wandering aimlessly through the halls. Otherwise, it took me actually interrupting a class to be questioned. Now you've seen the situation. Go to "Security Test Part 2" to see what district administrators had to say about campus security, and find out what changes they're making as a result of this investigation. |
