IDAHO FALLS - Flexible and personal education is hard to come by, but a new online high school may solve that problem. iSucceed is a statewide virtual high school, that get this, is free.

"We serve a whole variety of students, and for all different reasons," says Lindsay Miller from iSucceed.

The reasons range from the student is too advanced for a traditional high school to working teens and even teen parents.

"We're a public high school, you get a diploma from us like you would the traditional model. So, we get money from the district, we align with a district," says Miller.

The curriculum is based on the same one set by the Idaho State Board of Education. And iSucceed promises its virtual high school will not lack the things you find at traditional schools. The difference is personalized education.

"Their education is their education, its their high school, its their education and they can get from it what they want," says Miller.

"That's the exciting part, being able to stay home and do it online and have more time to do the stuff that i need to do," says Shaylynn Barrett, a prospective student. "It'll give me more time to work and make money to get ready for college."

iSucceed is only in its first year and is now recruiting students for year 2. So far there are about 500 students in the Gem state enrolled in the online classes. And the virtual school promises easy access to college classes and a discount to its affiliate school the University of Phoenix. And speaking of that virtual campus, we've hear for years about the stigma attached to online schools, but is it true?

"The stigma exists for people that don't know about online schools and know how they work," says Miller.

Well according to iSucceed, this type of personalized education takes a lot more discipline.

If you want to find out more information, there are two more info sessions planned, one at the America Inn of Rexburg Saturday at 10am. And one in Blackfoot at The Shilling House on Monday at 6pm.

Idaho law allows state agencies to divert some state income tax refunds to pay legal obligations like court fees, child support, and sheriff's garnishments. Taxpayers whose refunds have been diverted have no legal recourse. What do you think of the law?

  • Times are tight. If the state needs the money, this approach is better than budget cuts, tax hikes, etc.
  • I'm entitled to the refund, and the state can just take it? Unfair and ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
