ST. ANTHONY - "Its been brought to light i have back taxes i haven't paid. I apologize for that but its due to mitigated circumstances. There's a reason for it and we are- my wife and I are trying to make amends and catch up," said Mayor Garth Rose.

Over three years Mayor Rose is behind over 3,000 dollars in delinquent taxes. He claims illness has prevented him from properly paying on time. His home is up for sale, and is even being remodeled currently.
Rose has only officially been mayor since January, but does hope his council meetings make a positive impact.

Rose, "On Wednesday the council and I and staff hashed out a few things we need to do, we need to be doing in city and county, It was a very positive meeting, I appreciate the time the commissioners give us."

The Mayor is on a long list of people who owe taxes on the St. Anthony Treasurer's website: http://www.co.fremont.id.us/departments/treasurer/DelinquentTax.pdf

While some are behind on their taxes for a couple of years, others are facing it as a new challenge due to the economy. Tax services says its better to get on a payment plan now, then let them go completely unanswered.

"Its the government its something everybody has to do, you have to pay your taxes on times so you don't get interest and penalties and end up paying extra in the long run," said Tax Service employee Dawna Morillon.

Morillon continued, "There's a lot of people everywhere that are behind on their taxes. Especially right now with the economy situation, they don't have enough money to pay for taxes."

And since you'll owe the same amount whether you pay now or later, getting on a payment plan will save you money.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
