Farmers Markets Becoming More Popular
By Wes Horrocks
POCATELLO - Farmers markets are a place for local farmers and craftsmen to sell their goods. Now more than ever, their popularity is growing. More shoppers are visiting farmer's markets to find safe food and more vendors are showing up to earn some extra money.
"The crowd is getting better all the time," says Roy Smith, a tomato vendor. The Pocatello Farmers Market is usually well-attended which is great news for vendors. The bad news is more vendors are showing up to the market as well. John Boyle, who is on the market's Board of Directors says, "From what I can see your vendors, most of our vendors are doing pretty good this year. When we're full we're usually in the neighborhood of about 60 to 70 vendors." Some vendors say the increasing competition is partially due to the tough economy. More people are looking for ways to earn money. "If you're growing an excessive amount from what you're garden will grow then you can get rid of it. Also, you can share with your neighbors, and friends, and what have you," says Smith. In addition to the extra income, Smith says the recent outbreak of salmonella is also making the market popular. Home-grown fruit and vegetables are one of the most popular booths. "Yeah everybody wants to know if they're salmonella free. Yes, that's a big thing now, and where they haven't found what the problem is yet. So its still getting bigger all the time," adds Smith. To get into the farmers market you have to either grow or make what you're selling. And no matter what the reasons are for the increasing crowds, board members say they hope things continue to grow. "We've had pretty good crowds all year and what surprised me is that the 5th of July we had an excellent crowd. A lot more than I expected," says Boyle. The Pocatello Farmers Market is held next to the Old Town Pavilion Wednesdays from 5pm to 8pm, and Saturday's from 9am to pm. In Idaho Falls the market is near the Broadway Bridge on the Greenbelt. |
