Does it Really Work? - Crayola Crayon Maker
By Tommy Noel
"Does it Really Work" is really into the holiday spirit.
Throughout the month, we'll be testing gifts for both kids and adults. We begin with the kids. Let's check out the Crayola Crayon Maker. Third grade students at Iona Elementary will be Santa's little helpers in testing out the Crayon Maker. "They had seen it on TV, but they didn't know much about it," says Lori Crofoot of Iona Elementary. In a couple easy steps, the product claims you can mix crayon pieces and melt them, then mold into mini color swirl crayons. Dipping into the class crayon collection, we took some light and dark colors, and as mentioned in the instructions, the kids tore off the paper. "It took a long time to peel," says Mrs. Crofoot. Eventually, we had several bits and pieces... "We got to do it in a single layer, we can't let it overlap," says Tommy. ...and let's get ready to melt. "Now guess what we have to do," asks Tommy. "Wait ! Wait," respond the students. And we waited, and waited, and waited. "It took about 15 minutes for the crayons to melt," says Mrs. Crofoot. It was now time to pour, and this is when we ran into our first snag. Somehow, the trays got off track, and we were unable to pour the wax directly into the molds. "If i had my children doing it, I'd be nervous they might get burned," says Mrs. Crofoot. "You know what, it's locked," says Tommy. That's a safety feature until the product cools, but it also means we had no access to fix the tray. Move to Plan B. "Do you think if we tipped it, would it go into the mold," asks Tommy. So that's what we did. We made a mess, but since the Crayon Maker was locked, it was the only way to get the wax into the mold. To speed up the cooling process, we put our new crayons outside. "OK guys. Look what we got," says Tommy. Our new crayons are ready to go. And the kids got right to drawing pictures and writing messages. "They liked the finished product," says Mrs. Crofoot. The Spud-o-Meter is on hiatus for the next month. We welcome back the Noel-o-Meter. "I'd give it a three. It was kind of messy. And I'd be nervous for my old children to be pouring the wax," says Mrs. Crofoot. Three from an adult's view point, now from the 3rd graders. [Kids yell different ratings.] With an average of about a four. I purchased the Crayon Maker at Walmart for 20 bucks. By the way, if Santa bring this to your house for Christmas, make sure Santa also brings a light bulb. It's not included. |
