Does it Really Work? - Pumpkin Carving Kit
By Tommy Noel
With Halloween soon approaching, have you picked out your pumpkin yet?
I have a product that might help your gourd look great once you get it home. I've never used a pumpkin carving kit before in my life, but a lot of you have. So in this edition of Does it Really Work?, we'll find out which method is more fun. In a friendly competition, Anthony Congi and I will see who can carve a better pumpkin. "I'm seriously the most unartistic person in this station," says Anthony Congi. Anthony will carve the ole fashioned way. I'll use the Pumpkin Masters Carving Kit. My first roadblock and just a little too soon- trying to make a lid. "He broke the knife," says Anthony. One carving utensil already put to rest. After scooping out all the seeds and gunk in our pumpkins, we get our pattern ready. Being on the generous side, I let Anthony copy the pattern by hand to his pumpkin. "Ugh. My drawing is atrocious," says Anthony. Using the included Super Poker I transfer the pattern to my pumpkin. "Ooh. This is easy," says Tommy. I should know by now never to speak too soon. "Oh look at me cutting and Tommy's not," says Anthony. While Anthony is carving out his second eye, I"m still transferring. "It looks sad," says Justine Beauvais. "Yeah Tommy picked a depressing pumpkin," replies Anthony. "It was the easiest one," says Tommy. Finally, I finished my transfer. "Wow. I think this is gonna work," says Tommy. There I go again speaking too soon. Time to carve. You have to put the pumpkin in your lap, which means my pants will head straight to the dry cleaners. "Ninety-degree angle, gentle pressure," says Tommy. So far so good, until I couldn't punch out my pieces. "Oh that's why. I didn't cut all the way through," says Tommy. Frustrated, I take it out on the carving tools. "Ooh shoot. And I broke the drill," says Tommy. Meanwhile, Anthony looks calm and collected while I'm sweating bullets. "So how much has Anthony done," asks Tommy. "I'm almost done," replies Anthony. "And I've gotten one piece out. Well, at least mine looks pretty," says Tommy. Having the attention span of a TV news journalist, I quickly lose interest. "This is not fun," says Tommy. Refusing to quit, I calm down, concentrate on my cuts and finally finish. "Anthony has been updating his Facebook status while I was finishing my pumpkin," says Tommy. Both pumpkins look similar, but we all know Anthony enjoyed this more than I did. "Was it fun? Did you have fun," asks Tommy. "Oh I had a great time with it. Haven't done this in years," says Anthony. "I hated every moment of mine," says Tommy. Ok, that's a slight exaggeration. But not the best for my first time. Turning to the Spud-o-Meter. "I would give it a three-and-a-half," says Tommy. "There's a trend on Does it Work? lately. It's not like 'does it work', it's can Tommy mess it up," says Anthony. Arguments aside, Anthony and I end our friendly competition... with a truce. You can purchase the Pumpkin Carving Kit at Target for $4. |
