Does it Really Work? - Topsy Turvy Update
By Tommy Noel
Every Wednesday, I enjoy putting together a brand new 'Does it Really Work?' piece for you.
This week, though, I was dreading it. Here are some recent e-mails I've received: "'Hi Tommy, how's the Topsy Turvy coming along? Steve." "Hello Tommy!!!! i was just wondering if you have done an updated topsy turvy???? Did i miss it? did it not work???? Thanks! Rebecca" "Are you going to do an update on your tomato plant? Might be interesting to see how many people have been successful with the system." You've all asked me about the Topsy Turvy, now here's an update. "You better grow. Or else I'm gonna be disappointed, and all of Eastern Idaho will be very disappointed." That was June 3rd when I first planted the Topsy Turvy. Today, you'll see the outcome, something I've been trying to hide from you, the viewer, for the past 3 months. "It's dead. When you just get so involved in work you forget about the little things, like watering your Topsy Turvy." Whatever the excuse, I'm embarrassed and ashamed that I let everyone down. "If I can't even grow a tomato plant just think if I got like a dog or kid or something." But all is not lost... We found a double Topsy Turvy setup by Dennis Peterson. "I love it. We harvest a lot of tomatoes off of this. Just bowls full. We eat them like popcorn and cut them up in omelets," says Dennis Peterson. Dennis has been growing tomatoes for about six years, but this is his first attempt with a Topsy Turvy. And yes, Dennis had his doubts when he saw me putting together the Topsy Turvy. "It's high maintenance, and I just knew you wouldn't have time for it," says Dennis. With constant watering, pruning and just plain ole TLC, Dennis is right. "Twice a day you water," asks Tommy. "Yes. In the morning and at night," replies Dennis. "I don't think you even did twice a month," says Justine Beauvais. Yes, even my co-workers knew I was getting into trouble from day one. "We're almost at the end of them and I hate to see them go," says Dennis. With hundreds of tomatoes all summer long, the small investment really paid off. But most importantly, how do they taste? "Is that good or what," asks Dennis. "Wow," replies Tommy. These small tomatoes are called "Sweet 100's" and they're easily the best tomato I've ever tasted. On the Spud-o-Meter... remember, we're talking about Dennis' experience, not mine. "5-and-a-half. It turned out so well. We love the tomatoes," says Dennis. And you'll love the moral of this story. "It's not a matter of 'Does it Work', it's a matter of, can the person who uses it, work." Well, there's always next year. You can pick up the Topsy Turvy at Walgreens at stock up on them for next year. |
