Does it Really Work? - Kernel Cutter
By Tommy Noel
If you love the taste of fresh corn on the cob, but hate it when the kernels get stuck in your teeth, Tommy Noel may have a product for you.
In today's edition of Does it Really Work, Tommy tries a product that's supposed to quickly remove kernels from cobs. Idaho's harvest season for corn is very short, so right now is the perfect time to pick up some sweet corn, and right now might be the perfect time to pick up Pampered Chef's Kernel Cutter. Let's find out if it really works. Nestled off Highway 20 between Ucon and Rigby you'll find a huge two-acre corn field. "More people are experimenting with large gardens and a couple acres of ground that may have not been used before," says Rick Johnson. And speaking of experiments.. This is actually the first time ever Rick Johnson and Mike Rumsey have grown corn in this field. With 60,000 ears of corn behind us, we thought we'd sacrifice a dozen or so to try out Pampered Chef's Kernel Cutter. "Our young children for example, when they lose their front teeth, they have a hard time eating corn," says Rick. First impressions of the product... "Looks simple and elegant," says Rick. Our volunteer crew started shucking the corn, until we realized... "You know what? We can remove the husk, using the husk blade," says Rick. It always pays to read the directions before starting anything! Once we discovered the husk blade there was no more shucking with just our hands. "The little deal that slices those, it practically falls off the cob," says Mike Rumsey. So far, so good. Now for the cutting part. Once you get a good hold and rhythm, our corn just slipped right off the cob. "If you do a couple of them, you're gonna get the hang of it really well," says Rick. We went well past a couple and went through a dozen cobs in no time at all. While our volunteers noticed the ease of use, they also liked the safety features. "Trying to use a knife to do the same thing, presents quite a few problems like cutting," says Rick. "I'm gonna get one or two for my wife. We're gonna end the Band-aids on the ends of her fingers," says Mike. And now, we're all ears for the Spud-o-Meter rating. "Definitely a five-spud tool," says Rick. "I'd probably give that thing a five," says Mike. This is good news because it's been awhile since we've had a five- spud product! If you're interested in picking your own corn for $2.50 a dozen, contact Rick at 208-313-4422 for the Golden Jubilee Corn Field. Rick also sells corn near Rigby Chevrolet in the afternoons. Look for his stand near the American flag. Also, if you'd like to buy Kernel Cutter for $7.50 from Pampered Chef, contact Cortney Brown at 208-359-9722. |
