Does it Really Work? - Smart Swipe

If you're one of the millions of Americans who shop online, listen up! The "Smart Swipe" brings one of those credit card machines to your home!

Chances are you've bought something online.

"I usually shop online then have them shipped to KIDK," says Hasti Taghi.

Deals on shipping are what keeps the purchases rolling for Channel 3's Hasti Taghi.

"I always look for free shipping and a lot of times I'll get emails from companies that I shop from," says Hasti.

With her online expertise, she's the perfect tester for the Smart Swipe.

"It sounds like a good concept," says Hasti.

Instead of inputting numbers, you just swipe your credit card. The product says it encrypts or scrambles the number so hackers can't steal your information.

"Sometimes I wonder if the companies are really safe, and I try to shop from the bigger companies," says Hasti.

Hopefully this product will broaden Hasti's horizons when it comes to buyer confidence. Our confidence dwindled slowly as the software that came with the product was corrupt. So we downloaded the software from the company's website, and by now, Hasti's really itchin' to go shopping.

"Try number 2," says Hasti.

Set up was easy.

"Please plug the credit card reader in an open USB reader on your computer," says Hasti, reading on-screen instructions.

Hasti's decided on purchasing some make-up today from Bare Minerals.

"Should I buy it, Tommy," asks Hasti.

"Sure why not," replies Tommy.

"You're a bad influence on me," says Tommy.

$54 later, it's time to checkout.

"Tommy, you're breaking my bank," says Hasti.

Hasti still had to fill out the shipping address information. But when it was time to put in the credit card number..

"Ooh! Ok.. The lights are on," says Hasti.

One swipe later and the info magically appeared. Instead of numbers, the Smart Swipe puts in little yellow locks, hiding all the pertinent information.

"The Smart Swipe device has protected the chunks of information on your card," says Hasti, reading the on-screen instructions.

Hasti feels comfortable with the outcome and submitted her order.

"All right Tommy, you owe me 54 bucks," says Hasti.

Overall, Hasti liked the convenience and security of the Smart Swipe.

"It took out a lot of the work though because I didn't have to enter what credit card it was and the credit card number and things like that. I guess it felt a little more secure than usual." says Hasti.

Everything was going well, until I told Hasti the $100 price of the Smart Swipe.

"Oohhh.. A hundred bucks? I don't know. I don't know if I'd spend a hundred bucks on it," says Hasti.

And for the second week in a row, the product price lowers the Spud-o-Meter rating.

"I would probably give it a two," says Hasti.

Hasti says she'll wait until the price drops to 20 to 30 bucks, then she'll buy it, you guessed it, online.
