Does it Really Work? - Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker
By Tommy Noel
Warmer weather is planned for this weekend, which might be the perfect time to eat some ice cream.
The Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker is today's product for 'Does it Really Work?' We got some 3rd graders at Linden Park Elementary to test it out. Mrs. Seal's 3rd grade class gave up their recess to make ice cream. Now that's dedication! Making ice cream takes a lot of work, let's hope we have a tasty finale. "You put the ice in here and the salt, and you put the cream and stuff in here and that's how you make the ice cream," says Tommy Noel. Each student played an important role of making the ice cream. We quickly learned the smaller the ice cube, the better. When the ball was filled to the brim with ice, we added some rock salt. We then prepared our mixture using heavy whipping cream, several teaspoons of vanilla, and some sugar. After a quick stir, the creamy concoction went into the ice cream maker. "Do you really think this is gonna turn into ice cream," asks Tommy. "Yeah," replies the 3rd graders. "I really liked their enthusiasm. I thought they were really engaged in what they were doing, putting in all the ingredients," says Terri Seal. For the next ten minutes, the kids played a fun game of Hot Potato with a little bit of shakin'. "When they started to toss the ball, and really started getting into the action of mixing the ice cream, their faces were awesome," says Terri. When the music stopped, they had to answer a multiplication problem. After the first round, we did a quick stir, then added some more ice and rock salt, just as it mentioned in the instructions. Round two moved the kids to the floor with some passing and rolling, and of course, times tables. After another 5 minutes, it was time to scream for ice cream. We had two consistencies in our ball. Thick and thin. But nobody minded. "Yummy, yummy, yummy," says 3rd grader. "Two thumbs up," says 3rd grader. "That's good," says Terri. The ice cream was a hit, and our pint was gone in an instant. After the taste tests, the reviews started flowing in. "That was really fun since we all got a turn," says 3rd grader. "It was fun making it and the taste was good," says 3rd grader. "On the Spud-o-Meter, how do you rate the Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker," asks Tommy. [Most kids say five.] "Five. Most definitely," says Terri. You can pick this up at Bed Bath and Beyond for $25. |
