Does it Really Work? - Debbie Meyer Green Bags
By Tommy Noel
All this month, reporter Tommy Noel has responded to your requests in our "Does it Really Work?" segment.
Now he tries a product everyone seems to be talking about. The Green Bags are supposed to keep your fruits and vegetables longer. They claim to remove ethylene gas from foods, and that's the gas that speeds up deterioration. Infomercial: "Spoiled produce? Not again! Stop throwing away your money! Introducing Debbie Meyer Green Bags!" Roommates Rebecca Simmons and Ashley Penney were excited to try out the Green Bags. With 6 people in their apartment, they go through a lot of food. "They start going bad and we have to throw them out," says Rebecca Simmons. "Usually it's people telling me to eat their stuff so it won't go bad," says Ashley Penney. We put together a little experiment using strawberries, broccoli, carrots, bananas, and lettuce. "My mom would kill me if she saw I wasn't using a cutting board," says Rebecca. Half of each product was placed in a plastic container, the other half in a Green Bag. "I hope that they work," says Rebecca. We'll let everything sit for 10 days then find out if foods can really stay fresh longer. A week and a half later we check our results. Strawberries. "Got the mold starting right here," says Rebecca. And those came out the Green Bags. Broccoli. "They look about the same," says Ashley. Both had turned brown. Carrots didn't have much change and were still fresh. Bananas had the biggest difference. The green bags did slow down the ripening process, but not by much. "We can make banana bread," says Rebecca. Lettuce was a major disappointment. "Soggy. Wasn't something you'd want in a salad," says Rebecca. Again, they're talking about the product that was stored in a green bag. "The things in the Green Bags were worse. It was gross," says Ashley. "Would you eat anything that came out of the green bags? After ten days," asks Tommy. "No," replies Ashley. This doesn't look pretty on our Spud-o-Meter. "I wouldn't buy them, so I'd have to give them one spud," says Rebecca. "A two spud. I thought it was pretty bad," says Ashley. |
