Does it Work? - Tater Mitts

By Tommy Noel

Mashed potatoes.. French fries.. Scalloped potatoes.. They may be apart of your evening meal.

Although delicious, some of us spend way too much time in the kitchen peeling spuds.

Could we now have a solution and cut peeling time in half?

In the second part of our series, 'Does it Work?' Eyewitness News Reporter Tommy Noel puts Tater Mitts to the test. They promise to peel a potato in just 8 seconds.

The Idaho Potato.

A staple in our kitchens and in tonight's dinner. If they just weren't so darn difficult to peel.

"It does take awhile. Your hands get a little cold and slimy," says Sarah Fitch.

Fitch has grown up surrounded by potatoes. Literally.

"I grew up out in the country. Pretty much there were potato fields on 3 sides of our house," says Sarah.

With all those potatoes, Sarah would love an easier way to peel spuds. Bring on the Tater Mitts.

"These are cool," says Sarah.

But the coolness factor quickly wore off. After reading the directions, we learned we had to boil the spuds for several minutes BEFORE peeling. That was not brought up in the Infomercial.

"That was a little disappointing. I can usually peel all the potatoes I need in 5 minutes," says Sarah.

So after we boiled the potatoes, it was time to have some fun. I let Sarah attempt the 8 second challenge.

After 8 seconds though, there was quite a bit of peel left.

"Maybe a third of it," says Sarah.

It actually took about 50 seconds from start to finish.

We tried other potatoes, and got about the same results. The box claims their comfortable, but according to Sarah...

"The gloves were stiff and a little too large for my hands. I would save my money and use my potato peeler," says Sarah.

And just like we did with the Zorbeez, we now look to our spud meter, with 5 being the best.

"I would give it one potato," says Sarah.

Sarah added the Mitts were difficult to clean and some of the rocks starting coming off, after only a few potatoes.

On Wednesday, we'll test out the Twin Draft Guard. Can it really save a couple bucks on your heating bill? Find out on Eyewitness News at 5 and 10pm.
