Five Idahoans arrested in Haiti
By Emily Florez
BOISE - Five Idahoans are currently sitting in a Haitian jail, accused of child trafficking of 33 Haitian children.
Members from the Idaho-based organization "New Life Children's Refuge" are discussing their ordeal from a Haitian jail. The Haitian government charged them with child trafficking which they say is far from their intentions. The group members say they just wanted to get the children temporary safety at another orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Laura Silsby, a detainee in Haiti, said, "We have had our hearts broken over the last few days as we have cared for child after child who have lost their parents and are grieving." A father of one of the detained group members claims their efforts are nothing new, Mel Coulter, said, "My daughter had actually made two previous trips before the earthquake looking for a place to establish an orphanage wanting to help out. Their efforts actually predate the earthquake." However Haitian authorities have fears that traffickers could try to exploit the chaos of the country to engage in illegal adoptions. The group was arrested along the Haitian- Dominican Republic border, after Haitian police conducted a routine search of their vehicle. The orphan children were taken off the bus and placed in the care of a private orphanage in Haiti. The Haitian government claims the Americans had no documentation to move the 33 children through any Embassy and that they had no papers showing they were made orphans by the quake. Pastor Clint Henry, Central Valley Baptist Church, said "Everything comes down to paperwork. We thought we had done everything that we needed to do, but they are saying something else needed to happen." A senior U.S. Official says there's no indication that child trafficking is involved and reiterated the adults were simply moving the children to another orphanage they had set up. Though the official acknowledged that the group apparently did not have the all the proper paperwork. Pastor Henry said, "God's in control and he'll figure it out. We are just going to trust in him." Idaho friends and relatives have been in touch with those detained via text messages and phone calls. And they say they appreciate all of the prayers and support they are receiving. Tuesday a judge down in Haiti will hold a hearing with the accused Americans. Eyewitness News will keep you updated on what happens. |
