Lava Hot Springs family shocked, excited to win Ugliest Carpet Contest

LAVA HOT SPRINGS - A local family officially has the ugliest carpet in Southeast Idaho, and that means its going to be replaced.

It's the first time the Davids family can remember winning any type of award.

And they were shocked when a special visitor knocked on their door Thursday morning.

The big man himself was on hand to make the announcement, the Davids have the ugliest carpet. Tanny Davids said, "Is that a compliment, or not?

Whatever it is it means they win $2,000 of new carpet from Rug Rat Flooring.

They entered the contest earlier this month, but never thought they had a chance at winning. Davids said, "My stomach was just nervous, and the tears instantly (came). I was going to cry, and I think I almost did, but then I held it back."

Even Santa was moved when he made the presentation. Santa Claus said, "I think the look on Tanny's face was definitely worth it, and it is a great feeling."

The Davids have wanted new carpet for the last 11 years.

Several times they saved up for the big purchase, but vacations and surgeries have kept that from becoming a reality. "It's always just next time, next time. This time it really will happen," said Davids.

Throughout their home the Davids have six different colors of carpet.

In the basement, some areas are actually just pieces set next to each other.

There is also a big spot where oil was spilled years ago.

So even though it may be a day early, for this family it's a great Christmas present. Davids said, "We'll never forget this."

Rug Rat Flooring started the contest at the beginning of December and had a few dozen entries.
