BLACKFOOT - A teenage author from Preston spent the day talking to students, encouraging them to follow their dreams.
Not every student will become an author like Koltn Burbank, but many now know there are a lot of things they can accomplish. Kyler Croxford, a Mountain View Middle seventh grader said, "It's was pretty cool."
Burbank started writing The Fiddle of Fire as an assignment in 6th grade.
Now, as a Senior at Preston High School, is he is working on the second book in the fantasy series, and trying to remind other kids to take a chance. Koltn Burbank, author of The Fiddle of Fire said, "The lesson and message that I'm trying to get across is that people can do anything if they set their minds to it. A lot of people, I don't think, realize that anymore for some reason."
And for these language and writing students. Sierra Mortensen, a Mountain View Middle School student said, "I like to write about fantasy, or animals."
The message seems to have hit home. Ana Mosbrucker, a seventh grade student said, "It sort of inspires younger people, and it inspires older people to accomplish their dreams."
Even if those dreams don't include a pen and paper. Croxford said, "Like (Burbank) said, in sixth grade you don't like to write. I'm still in that part. I don't like to write that much."
Burbank also shared some of his experiences of dealing with stalkers, going to book signings, and his dream of seeing his book series made into a movie. Burbank said, "One word that I would have to say would be whirlwind. It has gone so fast. It seems like just yesterday that I was writing books, and looking for publishers. Now we're here doing this kid of stuff. It's exciting."
And who knows if someone from this Blackfoot school may follow his example. Mortensen said, "You can be able to do what you want to do."
After the presentation Burbank sold signed copies of his book.
He expects the second book to be coming out soon.
