Battling the frost

IDAHO FALLS - Everybody is talking about the freezing temperatures, but not everyone can hide from the cold, some are even embracing it.

Bundled up From head to toe. Temperatures approaching zero. Winter is still weeks away, but it's already feels like it's here... And some don't mind.

"the most beautiful part about the cold is it brings out the intensity and the beauty of the sky and the surroundings," says Kordy Rainey.

"Just getting our Christmas lights up, it's old but it's nice," says Kirstyn Tews.

But they aren't the ones battling the cold outside. Construction crews couldn't even start their machines up this morning. The pipes froze overnight.

"We have a jetter and a boiler and it uses water and it freezes in the generator and the boiler and it busts valves and piping so we try to keep them warm so things don't bust up throughout the nights, leaving them running... If it gets below zero, we generally can't do our work because the equipment won't work so we can't do any of the trenchless pipe repair,"

"This crew has been out here since 7a.m. Trying to get their equipment up and running...and after hours... It's working!"

Construction crews aren't the only ones working outside... Police officers strut their winter gear... keeping in mind they do receive an annual clothing allowance to stay warm.

You acclimate to the weather, you have to work in it so you just have to wear layers," says Idaho Falls parking enforcement officer, Kathy Curnutt.

Unless you are ready for Old man winter to wrap you in ice this weekend, you might want to stay indoors.

You might want keep some hand warmers nearby this weekend.

The temperature will be in the single digits most of the time; the coldest so far this season.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
