Garden project on hold

Bush Elementary School received a grant from the CHC foundation over a year ago to start a garden project; however, because the school wants to become a magnet school, they need to finish writing their entire curriculum before they use the grant money.
The problem is... time is running out. Becoming a magnet school- means going above education learning standards... Kindergarten teacher, Annie Rutz, wants to see exactly that for Bush Elementary. So, she wrote a grant for more than 5, grand to build a green house project to enhance the school's science program. "Well the biggest issue is we have 18 months to use the money and we wrote the grant with the approval of the school district and with the approval of the groundskeeper, and $2,000 of that grant money goes back to the school district itself to do the work and so the we are not sure why we are not getting the work done," says kindergarten teacher and grant writer, Annie Rutz. Upset parents want to see the money used before time is up. "Yeah we need to write the curriculum I get that, but the curriculum for that portion is already written it's done," says concerned parent, Dr. Rex Butterfield. The problem... According to the director of education for district 91, the school's entire curriculum must be written before the grant money can go into action. But time is running out- the school originally had master gardeners volunteer for the green house labor, but their offer could not last. "We were going to get all of this free labor to put up the green house, build the chicken coop, build the raised bed gardens and with all the delays, that's gone away, that volunteer time, so when it does come to pass we are going to be scrambling to get hours of volunteer time," says Rutz. The district has every intention of using the money, and the school has a plan. "Well the greenhouse project is definitely alive and well, and it's continuing and it's alive and well but we have some budget questions and some logistical questions like running electric lines and excavating part of the parking lot and how we can cover the associated costs with that," says the director of education for school district 91, Karla LaOrange. The district has 6 months to finalize the curriculum, if not... No more green house. The district's biggest concern is sustaining the project once it starts. They want to be sure that the curriculum is written so that if a teacher leaves, the green house is not abandoned. |
