District 91 trying to decide what to do next

IDAHO FALLS - For the first time in nearly twenty years, the Idaho Falls School District proposed an 84 and a half million dollar bond to the public for school and classroom upgrades.

Without passing the super majority that was needed, the school board will have to decide how to pay for those mandatory upgrades.

"The needs that we have aren't going away and we don't really have a good way of paying for the upgrades and the improvements that we need. We don't have a revenue source for those needs. The focus is probably going to need to be just on maintenance. We just don't have the money to make some of the upgrades and improvements that are needed," says District 91 Communication Specialist, Margaret Wimborne.

The district is encouraged that a majority of voters said yes. Their next plan will also include talking to the public, to get a sense of what they liked about the proposal, and what needs to be fixed.

"They recognize that we need to make some improvements and upgrades to our schools so now it's just a matter of coming up with the best plan to accomplish that," explains Wimborne.

The district will now seek other funding sources, and wait to see what happens with the January legislature.

"We may come back with another bond," says Wimborne.

The school board plans to hold a "special work session" to figure out what to do with the failed bond sometime after the thanksgiving holiday.
