Ammon expanding?

BONNEVILLE COUNTY - The City of Ammon is looking to expand, claiming territory from Hitt Road and 65th to Holmes and 97th. Currently it's Bonneville County land, but now Ammon needs it.

"They have bonded a lot of money into a sewer district and they need to put that sewer line in somewhere. Not only put it in, but have the residents along that line hook into that line," says Sharon Parry, Idaho Falls City Council member.

The City of Ammon proposed a plan to Bonneville County Planning and Zoning to have these four-square miles, deemed the area of impact, be allocated to Ammon. Bonneville County Commissioner Steve Serr says the need for the land is not just for the sewer line. It's for future growth of the city, but not everyone is onboard with the idea and homeowners may not even know about it.

"Those residents need to know that they very likely will be force annexed into the Ammon area," she adds.

If this area is deemed Ammon's area of impact, Ammon can annex any landowners into the city, and city laws require developments be hooked to the sewer line.

"Should the city of Ammon be granted their area of impact next week, there will be forced annexation. That's how they will pay for the sewer line," says Parry.

County commissioner Serr tells me this is not the case, but either way, the future will only tell.

The meeting brought before county commissioners is Wednesday, September 18th. All landowners in the area should attend and at least have their voices heard.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
