Building near Chubbuck to get a little more expensive

CHUBBUCK - Those looking to build a home or business near Chubbuck may soon be paying an increased fee.

The wastewater fee for the Chubbuck Impact Area was created about two years ago. The Chubbuck City Council will vote Tuesday to increase the fee.

More money is needed to make sure the sewer project will be paid off.

The good news is that the new fee won't affect everyone.

It is only for new home and business owners building outside of Chubbuck City. Steven England, Chubbuck City Mayor said, "I think that those who are going to develop out there recognize the need for the sewer."

The reason the City Council is involved in the fee is because they are part of the Wastewater Collection Authority. England said, "Even though (Chubbuck) as the lead agency administers those funds they are separate from city funds. They are accounted for in a separate way from the city funds, and are audited separately."

The fee is going up $63 to $5490.

All of the money gathered will help pay off the $22 million sewer project.

While no one likes to hear about fee increases, most believe this change will have little impact on future growth. Jim Johnston, Pocatello Realtor said, "There area lot of people that really do want to be outside the city limits, but still have the services that are available. So this is a way that that can happen."

As long as two to three people build on each acre in the northern county the fee should stay steady. "Right now, in the whole county the limitation is one home per five acres, and this would allow developers, if they could hook to this sewer system, to develop a normal subdivision," said England.

The contract for the first section of the sewer project is expected to be finalized by the first of the year.

The Pocatello City Council, and Bannock County Commissioners, who are also involved in the Wastewater Authority, are expected to pass similar resolutions or ordinances.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
