National Guard kids boot camp
By Danica Lawrence
BLACKFOOT - From down on the ground performing army-style push-ups to up top in the Humvees checking out a soldier's real life views when he's on duty- these elementary students took advantage of a National Guard boot camp.
"I want to see the Humvees," says third grader Ethan Murdock. Several stations were set up and inside each one... A new lesson about a soldier's experience when he's on tour. The favorite room, the gym... "There are a lot of people that have went before them that have served in our country's armed services and secured the rights and the freedoms that we all enjoy to this day and I think it's important to let our kids know that at a very early age so that they can appreciate that as they get older and they start getting into those history classes," says Sgt. Roy Breshears, recruiter Idaho National Guard First Class. II volunteered my arm at the first aid station. "Being Veterans week we just wanted to make sure that all the kids realize what soldiers go through and some of the sacrifices they make, I think that's it's important that are students have a better idea of what it takes to help keep America free," says Groveland principal, J Thayne. Faculty wanted students to have a hands-on experience with the soldiers in light of Veterans Day. "We also have some students whose fathers have been deployed and it's a way of paying tribute to them and their families," adds Thayne. The staff hopes to continue with the event every year. They want the students to remember what they learned this afternoon for their big Veteran's Day assembly. |
