Candidates hope to see lots of people at the polls in Bannock County
By Wes Horrocks
POCATELLO - Bannock County expects to see low voter turnout for Tuesday's election.
Fewer absentee and early votes were cast in Bannock County compared to past elections. Troy Paz, a regular voter said, "I think everybodys vote matters." That could mean fewer people will be at the polls, or that more people would actually be in town on election day. For several who did vote Tuesday it's a regular practice. Darrel Shappart, Pocatello voter said, "I always try and vote." Sherri Palmer, a consistent voter added, "Every time there is an election I vote. No matter what it is; preliminary, I vote." Off-camera those who aren't heading to the polls tell me they just don't know enough to vote. S few were even surprised there was an election Tuesday. That's something the consistent voters can't understand. Palmer said, "If you don't vote you can't gripe." Jeff Olaveson, who is planning to vote added, "I think it's our right, and it's something that we need to do." Several voters also feel an obligation to express their opinion about who should govern Pocatello and Chubbuck. Shappart said, "You can't complain if you don't come out and vote." Paz added, "It's very important for our community, for our city, everything to get out and vote." Not quite 10,000 people voted in the 2005 Pocatello election. Candidates have spent the last few weeks urging people to get out and vote. A few even believe that a low turnout will actually hurt their chances of winning. Polls are open until 8 p.m. Tuesday if you haven't had a chance to get out and vote. Of course KIDK.com will have the full results Tuesday tonight when they are available. |
