Hundreds run to raise money for Girls on the Run
By Wes Horrocks
POCATELLO - Girls on the Run in Southeast Idaho is getting help from more than 100 men, women, and children.
They all took part in, you guessed it, a run. Even before the sun was up Saturday, dozens of people were at the Southeastern District Health Department getting ready to run. Marya Nigh, a Girls on the Run Participant said, "I feel really happy." The 5K Halloween Spooktacular Fun Run/Walk is a fundraiser for Girls on the Run. Christina Beseris, Organizer said, "A lot of their money comes from this so they can buy shirts, and treats, and stuff like that." The Girls on the Run program is open to girls ages 8 to 14. Twice a week after school they're taught to have positive emotional, social, and mental character. Nigh said, "It's a really good program." They also practice running during the 90 minute lesson. Beseris said, "Get active, eat healthy, and just make good choices." At Saturday's event the Girls on the Run definitely had the upper hand thanks to their training. Many nearly run a 5K during their bi-weekly meetings. "I have to keep my mind straight, and just keep running," said Nigh. Regardless of how fast they are everyone who came out for the event got a T-shirt, and other prizes. The health department hopes the run will remind more people get involved as girls on the run volunteers or coaches. Beseris said, "It's fun to have girls together doing it. You have friends, you meet friends. I think it's really important to get the community out here to support it." Girls on the Run is held at a variety of middle and elementary schools in District 25.
