Pedestrians being frequently hit in Rexburg

REXBURG - "It's kind of an incentive to do something good, instead of just write tickets all the time," said Rexburg Police Patrolman Lyndon Barron.

If an officer witnesses you being courteous on the road they'll give you a coupon for a free car wash, hair cut, or even an oil change.

"You stopped for that pedestrian backed on 2nd west. And you used your signal, and did everything correctly. So I am actually going to reward you for that, rather than write you a ticket for doing something wrong. Does that does sound okay?" asked Officer Barron.

And while Jordan Bastian got a reward for doing the right thing, police are trying to locate a driver who nearly hit Joe Law this morning.

"She was looking that way and she just mashed on the gas," said Joe Law.

Even last Friday a pedestrian was hit on a crosswalk on 2nd East near 5th south, which goes to show just how needed the Share the Road program is.

"If it reaches a handful of people, I think it's successful," said Officer Barron.

This skater got a free car wash today for getting off his skateboard before using the crosswalk.

"What we are doing, people that are doing things right..." said Officer Barron.

"Oh yeah, I read about that in the paper," said Brock Torpin.

"We're going to give away some things, where you got off your skateboard, walked across, pushed the button," said Officer Baron.

Officer Barron later asked him, "Would you help us by spreading the word?"

"Yeah will do," said Torpin.

So instead of getting a failure to yield ticket like Lavon McGary did last Friday for sending Emily Sweeney to the hospital with a broken leg, Be courteous.

And who knows, you might be rewarded.

Officers can't pull you over in your car to give you a reward.

So they might follow you around for a block or two in hopes that you will get out of your car.

Two pedestrian fatalities in the last two years are still fresh on the minds of local law enforcement as well.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
