Sunday Liquor Sales in St. Anthony?

With so many visitors to the St. Anthony sand dunes, some businesses say they are losing money by not being allowed to sell alcohol on Sunday.

City ordinances prohibit any kind of Sunday liquor sales, but that may soon change.

Wendy Stevens, Bottle Shop bartender: "There's nowhere to go to get beer sales."

Wendy Stevens is a bartender at the Bottle Shop in St. Anthony. Over the past few years, the bar has seen a huge increase of summer time customers.

But every Sunday, a city ordinance forces this door to close while customers go elsewhere.

Stevens: "It'd be a lot easier for them to be able to come here and we would make a lot of profit off of the beer sales."

Across the street at Cougar Corner, signs posted on beer coolers reading "No Sunday Sales" say it all.

Randy Rose, Cougar Corner Owner: "They drive up to Ashton and the outskirts of Rexburg because they can buy their beer."

Owner Randy Rose says because the city is changing so much, business owners should have a right to sell alcohol on Sunday if they want to.

Rose: "All of us in Fremont County need to have a seven day recreational week."

Rose is one of several business owners who recently approached the St. Anthony city council and asked them to amend current ordinances that prohibit Sunday liquor sales.

Taci Stoddard, St. Anthony City Clerk: "One of them could be to include just beer sales on Sunday and another one will probably include beer and liquor by the drink sales."

Some in the community don't think alcohol should be sold on Sundays. Business owners say if you're opposed to it, you don't have to buy it and that now is the time to change.

Rose: "I would hope they would give us our choice to open and sell beer and also by the drink if we choose to."

The City Council discussed liquor sales at their last meeting.

They are meeting again Wednesday night and may make a decision on if Sunday alcohol sales are a go.
