Bonneville County home sales on the rise

IDAHO FALLS - Economists predict the end may be close for the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. And the Bonneville County housing market is proof!

"We are still seeing people come into our area and people wanting to move up to the next stage in homes," says Voight Davis real estate agent Jacqueline Kennedy.

Local real estate agents like Jacqueline kennedy suggest the market is picking up due to the Federal government's $8,000 tax credit- issued in January, that goes to first time home buyers.

"It's helping a lot of first time buyers actually get into a home right now, when they would not have had that chance before," explains Kennedy.

The National Association of Realtors shows home sales are up in the West while prices are down. Last year between July and September in Bonneville County, 333 homes were sold - and this year- sales remain stable- selling 304.

This single family homes just sold two weeks ago and was only on the market for 11 days. That's how fast these low-priced homes are selling.

"Our home prices are still a lot below what a lot of other areas are," adds Kennedy.

Spring and Fall tend to be the most popular time for home sales, but as these days get shorter so does the number of "sold signs."

"We do slow down in the winter months, people don't want to be out moving," says Kennedy.

So despite the tough economy, the Bonneville County housing market is not feeling the punch.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
