Swine flu concerns in Shelley schools
By Anthony Congi
SHELLEY- Donna Heline claims her son, a student at Shelley High School, tested positive for Influenza Type A.
Because she herself has been sick, she declined to go on camera. By phone, she told me they are currently awaiting results from state labs to confirm the Type A was in fact swine flu. She also claims the school's vice principal and receptionist have told her that her son could lose credit if he goes past the allowed sick days. The current policy at the high school states you can miss 5 absences per class period, which is ten days per semester. "We don't have any confirmed cases either from a clinic or from a, we do have some parents that say we have swine flu, but we don't have any documented cases from a doctor or health care place," says Shelley High School Principal, Dale Clark. According to Dr. Brad Erikson with the Shelley Family Health Clinic, there have been 6 positive cases for Influenza Type A in Shelley over the past week. However, only one of the tests have been sent to state labs. "The recommendation that we've received is that you only send those on if someone looks extremely sick or there's risk of pneumonia or hospitalization. Once it's present in the area, there's no reason to keep trying to get numbers. You end up just adding extra costs to the patient and you don't really change the treatments," says Erikson. "If there are extra ordinary reasons, we ask that they're documented. Not just my mom says I'm sick, but actually that we bring in doctors notes," says Clark. Donna told me she does have a note, but hasn't turned it in yet because her entire family has been home sick. If her son is approved for the time off, he won't lose credit, but will still have some catch up work to be done. "There are reasons why kids miss school. But it's hard on kids. We don't have a very good system for keeping kids caught up that do miss a lot of days, especially if they're right in a row," says Clark. Doctors are urging people to get their regular flu shots. The family health center in Shelley does plan on getting the H1N1 vaccination sometime next month. |
