IDAHO FALLS - It's called Cash for Clunkers. It's trying to get you to go green by trading in the old for the new.

"They're trying to get cars off the market that have bad gas mileage," says Dave Miller, Smith Hyundai of Idaho Falls GM.

It's a government program that gives you money back.

"Program either ends November 1st or when the money runs out," says Miller.

Here are the rules: you bring in your gas guzzler and the dealership gives you between 35-to 45-hundred dollars off your brand new car.

"It's gotta be no older than 25 years and get less than 18 mpg," says Miller.

And the new car has to be fuel efficient.

"Just have to get better than 22 MPG," says Miller.

The deal is... If you improve fuel efficiency in a truck by at least two miles-per-gallon or a passenger car by four miles-per-gallon, you get 35-hundred dollars to spend. Trucks with five miles-per-gallon improvement and cars that increase efficiency by 10 miles-per-gallon equal 45-hundred dollars.
So you'll be saying farewell to the old,

"We have to dispose of the cars so they're not back on the road," says Miller.

And hello to the new.

"Helps the economy. Selling new cars and getting that flow going," says Miller.

So not only are you helping the environment and economy, you'll drive off in a brand new car.

Smith Hyundai in Idaho Falls is currently the only dealership in Eastern Idaho to offer the deal. The government is hoping to get more car companies on board. For rules and regulations visit:
