BANNOCK COUNTY - An hour-long standoff in ended peacefully Wednesday morning.

It started around 10:30 a.m. on Moonglow Dr.

Bannock County Sheriff's deputies tried to serve two citations on Nathan Schenk for allegedly assaulting a family member last night.

Schenk, who was not supposed to be at the home, then barricaded himself in a room where there were firearms.

Twenty five law enforcement officers from the regional SWAT team were called in, and negotiators were able to talk him into surrendering.
Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen said, "It was textbook as far as I'm concerned. We did ask the neighborhood to evacuate around the area, because of the possible use of deadly force, and the neighbors have been extremely well."

Along with the citations, Schenk now faces felony charges of criminal trespassing and delaying and obstructing.

He is being held at the Bannock County Jail without bond.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
