DRIGGS - The seven branches of The First Bank of Idaho will remain open and unlike the 1929 stock market crash that caused people to run to the bank and withdraw all their money, the FDIC's insurance is keeping things relaxed.

There are 11 banks in total for a city just over 1,000 people, and locals aren't surprised another one is failing.

"I think there's been too many banks open, even here in this little town there's too many banks and not enough people to bank in them," said Driggs resident Barbara Butler.

Scott Mulligan who had a checking account agreed, "It doesn't surprise me at all that a big bank has come in. Right across the street we have Wells Fargo now, which used to be Bank of Jackson Hole."

"I thought I'd come down here with long lines out the window, with people taking their money out and that I'd get in line to get the last of it," said Cal Glover.

But that wasn't the case, there weren't lines out the door. Still the bank stationed a police officer just in case something did happen.

Although the first Bank of Idaho is being transferred to US Bancorp, its still business as usual here at this Driggs branch. There are signs out front saying its FDIC insured, which means your money is safe.

I called the FDIC about the transfer here's what David Barr had to say, "The bank failed because it had a high concentration of commercial real estate, development, and construction loans... Those borrowers haven't been paying their loans."

And if you're curious where the money is going, the First Bank of Idaho had nearly 400 million dollars in deposits. US Bank bought 260 million of those deposits for only 1.4 million dollars. The FDIC will be picking up the remaining brokered deposits.

Glover continued, "I think its okay, I think the economy is going to get better, and I'm not too worried."

That's the feeling most people are walking away after leaving their bank.

Customers of First Bank of Idaho will still see the same employees in the future. That won't be the same case for some management positions.

This is the first bank in Idaho to fail this year, it joins nearly 30 others in the country to fail so far in 2009.
