IDAHO FALLS - It will cost a little more to enter some of our local national forests. The Caribou-Targhee Forest has announced rate increases at its recreation sites. Fee increases range from 2 to 10 dollars. Affected areas include:

The Bishop Mountain Lookout, Squirrel Meadows Guard Station and Warm River Springs Guard Station in the Ashton/Island Park Ranger District.

The Driggs Bunkhouse/Cabin in the Teton Basin Ranger District.

The Pine Bar and Mill Canyon Campgrounds in the Soda Springs Ranger District.

According to the Forest Service, each year, more and more people visit national forests but funding does not keep pace with the existing need. The fee increases go into effect immediately.

Idaho law allows state agencies to divert some state income tax refunds to pay legal obligations like court fees, child support, and sheriff's garnishments. Taxpayers whose refunds have been diverted have no legal recourse. What do you think of the law?

  • Times are tight. If the state needs the money, this approach is better than budget cuts, tax hikes, etc.
  • I'm entitled to the refund, and the state can just take it? Unfair and ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
