Titanic comes to Idaho Falls
By Jennifer McGraw
IDAHO FALLS - Over 96 years later and the artifacts from Titanic have been recovered to tell you the wondrous story of a mighty ship.
1912 the Titanic set sail for the voyage of a lifetime. A ship that defied logic, an unsinkable ship with more luxuries than the grandest of hotels. "This ship was the lap of luxury," says Kelsey Salsbery with the Museum of Idaho. But as we all know, the ship didn't live up to it's name. A vessel that took years to build, vanished in minutes, taking 15-hundred lives with it. The damage was done, but the legend lives on through exhibits and shows. "It really kind of brings to life what happened that night and there's so many stories that go along with that," she adds. For 73-years the remains of the ship were lost two and a half miles deep on the bottom of the Atlantic. "The pressure down there is roughly six thousand pounds per square inch, which is just tremendous and the salt water at work and everything, it could really reek havoc on materials and that we've been able to preserve so many so exquisitely is really extraordinary," says Leslie Cone, the exhibit registrar. "Some of the artifacts that we have here are the perfume vials that still have perfume in them in which guest can even smell the perfume. That was from a very prominent perfume seller from Great Britain trying to make his mark in America, that's why he set sail on Titanic," says Salsbery. The moment captured in time, taking visitors on a journey through the tales and legends from the life on board to the depths of the sea. "Bringing up the artifacts and putting them to real life putting the actual object itself. That what's so thrilling about this exhibit and people are really going to connect with these artifacts and these stories," she adds. The exhibit offers a variety of interactive elements. From the frozen iceberg to getting the identity of someone who was on the Titanic. When you board the ship everybody gets a pass. It doesn't necessarily matter what class you're in. I'm in the second class cabin and I still lost my life. This Titanic exhibit opens up March 5th, what will your fate be? |
