BONNEVILLE COUNTY - Thousands of students in the Bonneville School District may soon have an extra day off each week.
District 93 is looking at making the switch to 4 day school weeks because it needs to trim its budget. So far, the district is estimating it would save around $1M to $1.5M. But, that's if its done right.
"I think it could help out a lot. More spare time to do homework on the weekends if you need to," says Hillcrest Freshman, Justin Love.
Love's words don't quite match up with some of the parents in the district.
"There's a point of saturation where the kids are going to reach burnout," says Camille Pratt.
"I think they're trying to save money by doing that, and I think society is just going to have to pay for it anyway because the kids are going to be doing things eventually that aren't good," says Carolyn Norris.
Both of these mothers aren't buying into the entire idea of a 4 day school week. But, most teachers and administrators do. District 93 Superintendent Dr. Charles Shackett tells me, if the switch is done right it could save the district more than $1M and potentially keep people from being laid off.
"That's my big goal, is to not fire, rift any teacher," says District Superintendent Dr. Charles Shackett. "We've got to keep the employees we have."
But, if the change happens, some hours will have to be cut for positions like School Resource Officers and custodians.
"I think some people don't really like change, I think change is a good thing, I think it could help, but you've got to change in the right way," says Love
So far, the district thinks the right way is by cutting out Mondays, but Dr. Shackett is getting different feedback.
"Every single person in favor of it wants the day off to be Friday," says Dr. Shackett.
The district wants Mondays so power to the buildings can be cut over the weekend, since there aren't activities on that day. But, if the day off is Friday, the power can't be cut because of extra curricular activities, and that won't really save much money.
As for Wednesday night's meeting, no official decision was made. The board still has to look through a lot of details.
