Co-Op needs your help
By Araksya Karapetyan
IDAHO FALLS - The Eagle Rock Co-Op opened back in August of 2008. In the last six months they've been picking up business, but not enough.
"It's going ok, a little bit slower then what we like," says Lisa Tobin, Co-Op manager. What they'd like is more regular shoppers. "Getting the members and non members alike to come in and shop and spend ten dollars a week," says Tobin. Six hundred eighty-three people have joined the Co-Op, but you don't have to be a member to shop here. "Probably half the customers that come in are just walk-ins," says Tobin. "Seems like it's a special trip, but gives you an excuse to get downtown," says Dennis Raunig, walk-in customer. What you'll find here are healthier choices "Benefits of this Kombucha Tea, is that it helps with digestion, works as a detox, and also suppresses your appetite," says Tobin. But more importantly, products from local producers "Clover Leaf half and half, this is a creamer over in Buhl, Idaho," says Tobin. "I want to support something that's really community based," says Joel Simpson, Co-Op member. And those who shop here agree it's fresher. "It's roaster fresh you can see the date when it was roasted, it's on the 13th. Most coffees you buy at the grocery store are roasted weeks or months before," says Raunig. Plus, there's more of a selection. "This ones from Peru, there's one from Ethiopia," says Raunig. As far as how much you'll be spending. "Co-Ops generally aren't as effective as going to the big bucks consumer places," says Simpson. "If spending a little bit more to stay healthy you're gonna spend less on prescriptions, going to the doctor, any of the other long term effects," says Tobin. If you're interested in joining the Co-Op, there is a one time 150 dollars membership fee. As a member you'll get discounts, every time you shop. Or stop by to check it out. They're located in downtown, on A Street, right next to Great Harvest. |
