Could the D-TV transition be delayed?

IDAHO FALLS - On February 17, KIDK and all other nationwide TV stations will stop transmitting their analog signals and switch exclusively to digital.

To see if the public is ready, KIDK will perform a test by feeding black into the analog transmitter.

"I don't think that it will be the last one. I'm not sure how many more we're going to conduct. But I believe we want to do another one or two before the February 17th date," says KIDK Chief Engineer, Gary Smith.

If you are still able to see Channel 3, then you're ready for the switch.

But if the president-elect gets his way, the transition will not take place in mid-February.

The heads of the House and Senate Commerce Committees have received a letter from the Obama-Biden transition team wanting a delay.

Obama's request comes after news that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration has no money left for the analog TV converter program... which gives 40-dollar coupons toward a converter box that makes analog TV's digital-ready.

Obama does have support for this request, including the outgoing Chair of the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and key Congressional Democrats.

"I kinda had mixed reactions when I first heard it. In a way it still sounds like there are quite a few people around the country who aren't ready for the switch over, but on the other hand we've been operating two sets of transmitters for 5 years now. So from that stand point, it'll kinda be nice to get this done, get it behind us and move on," said Smith.

The Federal Communications Commission fired back saying a delay is unlikely to happen and provides 'credible' reasoning as to why it should not happen.

The FCC's Chairman, Kevin Martin said, "We've spent a lot of time and energy getting ready for the February 17 date...I am concerned about the consumer confusion that would be created."

As it stands now the FCC will not be changing the February 17th plan unless Congress passes a ruling against it.

If you are still unsure if you're ready or if you see black during our digital test at the top of this very hour; and you aren't sure what to do, KIDK is here to help.
