IDAHO FALLS - AAA-Idaho predicts 2009 will be a year of great travel bargains.

"A lot of the companies are offering a $300 discount if you book the air and car and hotel all at once. Some of the hotels are throwing in a fourth or fifth night free," says Morris Murdock travel agent, Celeste French.

All of this, to entice you, the traveler, to step on a plane or get in your car and enjoy a little time away from home. But will it do the trick?

"There are values out there. I don't think they're screaming deals like we're looking for," says French.

In southeast Idaho, the travel forecast may have a lot to do with your weather forecast.

"If we have a really brutal winter again, people will want to get out," says French.

And those who travel, escape the cold to de-frost in some mid-winter sun.

"Hawaii and Mexico and cruising are always the hot destinations for people from here. This year, the prices of all those destinations are less," says French.

You may not see the world this year, but a more patriotic trip within the U.S. And Canada will be on many lists.

But how much do we really know about this year in travel?

"We really don't know a lot. It's kind of a wait and see," says French.

Idaho law allows state agencies to divert some state income tax refunds to pay legal obligations like court fees, child support, and sheriff's garnishments. Taxpayers whose refunds have been diverted have no legal recourse. What do you think of the law?

  • Times are tight. If the state needs the money, this approach is better than budget cuts, tax hikes, etc.
  • I'm entitled to the refund, and the state can just take it? Unfair and ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
