Winterizing vehicles
By Justine Beauvais
POCATELLO - When the winter weather kicks in driving can become dangerous. To ensure safety on the road it's a good idea to be prepared.
"One of the first things is to make sure the tires aren't going to allow me to slide off of the slippery road conditions," says Marc Wride, owner of Big 0 Tires. Proper inflation, adequate tread, studs and traction on all four tires can be a big help. So can paying attention to what's under the hood such as changing the oil, checking the battery and taking care of belts and hoses. "Just the general health of the car, all of the systems all of the fluids," says Wride. Staying safe also takes place from the inside out. "You have to check to see about visibility so your wipers need to perform well," he says. In addition to paying attention to the vehicle, pack along items that will help in an emergency. "The safety kit. You know the blankets, the food, the flashlights, the shovel, the tire chains, they can assemble all of that at home and I would put that in the trunk and be ready for those bad situations," says Wride. Whether seeking out a professional or doing it yourself, a check up on your car now can make a difference during the dropping temperatures. "All of the systems need to be addressed and you may find that they're all in good shape but you'll drive with more confidence if you test them," says Wride. |
