Runners brave the cold to give warm food to less fortunate
By Hasti Taghi
For the fourth year, runners ran or walked a one mile, 5-k or 10-k to support local food banks. More than 550 runners make this the second biggest event of it's kind in Idaho. Topped only by Boise.
"I'm gonna run to feed the hungry," says runner Paula Drain. And feeding the hungry was on everyone's mind as they braved the below freezing morning temperatures. Bundled up against the cold, these runners didn't let the winter chill stop them in their tracks. "The weather's not so bad, once you get running you get warm and it's for a good cause," says Drain. Proceeds will help bring warm holiday meals to those who would otherwise go without one. "I think it's very important. It helps me remember what to be thankful for and the little things and to think about those that have no food and no place to go, being out here in the cold makes me thankful for my warm home," says runner Lyndsi Davis. These runners got an early start on their season of giving and also for a little extra perk... burned off some of those holiday calories. "We'll be burning nowhere near how much we'll eat at dinner but it's close to 550, 600 calories," says Dr. Margaret Huggins. That means an extra piece of pie, minus the extra guilt. There seems to be one common theme for thanks this holiday season. "For my family." "My kids and family." "My family and friends." "Family, friends, this community that I live in." The runners raised well over $10,000 but that's still not much compared to the demand for help. The Idaho Falls Community Food Bank has seen an almost 40 percent increase. To help your neighbors in need, stop by your local food bank anytime during the holidays. |
