SHELLEY - The most recent phone scam, has become a popular one around the country, and now it's making its way here to Eastern Idaho.

It starts with a call.
Most likely from a blocked number.

"Hello?" says Dorothy Anderson, recent scam target.

Followed by a familiar name.

"Heard them saying they were their grandson, Klane," says Joni Mattson, Anderson's daughter.

"Do you remember that at all?" asks Araksya Karapetyan.
"A little bit, but haven't thought of it much," says Anderson.

Then a phony story.

"Had been in an accident in Canada," says Mattson.
"Can't even remember now what he said, but he wanted ...What did I tell you...I've forgotten," says Anderson.

And of course, some money.

"Needed a credit card number or some money sent to him, to fix the car so they could get home," says Mattson.
"Asked if I wanted some money," says Anderson.

That's what happened to Dorothy.

"She was saying oh dear and she was starting to get upset," says Mattson.
"I thought for heaven sake's what were they talking about," says Anderson.

Lucky for her, her daughter Joni, was there to put a stop to it.

"I went right into the bedroom and picked up on the other line. I said this isn't Klane, she is this, they said yeah this is Klane, this is Klane and I said this is not Klane who it this," says Mattson.

Busted.

"They hung up," says Mattson.

Looks like whoever made that call, needed do more research.
Klane is not Dorothy grandson, he's her son.

"She has dementia she wouldn't have been able to sort that out," says Mattson.

And that's exactly what they were hoping for.
Had Joni not been home, who knows what would have happened.

"It's heart breaking that people would prey on the elderly when they're so helpless and they don't know, they don't now the voice of every single grandchild," says Jaelyn Hansen, Anderson's daughter.

According to Donna Oe, the president of the Better Business Bureau.
there have been incidents exactly like this, with grandchild calling, saying they've been in an accident or in are in jail, and need money.
If you get a call like this, hang up, and contact the BBB, at 523-975.
