INL Science Expo
By Tommy Noel
IDAHO FALLS - Thousands of students are expected to roam the Old Ernst Building in Idaho Falls over the next few days for the Annual INL Science Expo.
Hundreds of kids attended Woody Sobey's "Airplane to the Moon" presentation. It's all part of the eighth annual INL Science, Engineering and Safety Expo. "We're talking about space and space flight and all the forces involved in that," says Woody Sobey. Woody comes from the Discovery Center of Idaho and showed off several demos to sixth to eighth grade students. "I've been interested in science and I have so much fun with it, I want to share that enthusiasm with others," says Sobey. At the same time, 30 other demonstrations and interactive exhibits were taking place, proving just how cool science is. "Love seeing the kids, love teaching them about robotics and get them interested," says Koby Hansen of AmmonKnights. "What's been your favorite thing so far," asks Tommy Noel. "The electric shock thing over here," says Noah King. Noah's talking about an exhibit where a shock was sent through the arms of 8 people, all in the name of science. "Most people think it's boring, but I think it's pretty cool," says Erica Valdez. "The idea with the hands on, is that if you get them fired up and excited about it. Then when they have to do the other stuff, which is also important, learning through books and what not, about the science, they have the enthusiasm to carry them through," says Sobey. For the very first time at the annual Expo, safety is a major component. "Safety is number one, always," says Superman, AKA Danny Smith of CWI. With the help of some Superheroes, kids got to learn how to properly use different types of safety equipment. "Everything we do, we do it safely. We protect everybody," says Smith. It makes you wonder.. Who's having more fun? The kids or the adults? And the public is invited to check out the Expo on Saturday from 10 to 4. The Old Ernst Building is located on Broadway behind Arby's. |
