Confusing Construction Signs Follow Up

Confusing Construction Signs Follow Up

By Hasti Taghi

RIGBY - You may remember a story we did just a couple of weeks ago regarding confusion about construction signs on Highway 20.
Well... we received an e-mail from a concerned viewer who says his family was in an accident in that construction zone and he wants things to be changed.
Taking action for you..We went out to investigate the problem...
The accident happened almost 2 months ago but to the Banneck's it's as if it was yesterday... They say inadequate signs were a contributing factor to that unforgettable day and want to know what can be done to make a change.

May 21st... Kim Banneck and 6 of her children were on their way to Rexburg to see her oldest son graduate. But when his name was called to cross the stage... The Banneck's were not in the audience.

"It's something we can't get back."

That's because the Banneck's were part of a 4-car pile up on highway 20.

"The 1st car didn't have enough time to slow down...the next car tried to avoid him but hit him and there was another car then me."

13 people were injured but thankfully... all survived. Banneck still suffers from broken ribs and her children occasionally see a chiropractor for their injuries. According to the Bannecks... construction signs were not adequately placed to warn drivers of upcoming bumps in the road construction. But is this to blame for that day's crash?

"I think it's a contributing factor."

I went to the department of transportation to see what can be done to make the appropriate changes.

"Do you think we can change anything now that you know about this accident?"
"We always encourage the public to tell us about problems and we will definitely look into it now and see what we can do."

When these changes happen, we will let you know. The highway 20 construction will be complete by the end of the month.
